TEDx another success
Date: Wednesday, 6th April 2011
Time: 17:00 - 21:00
Location: IDI, Phoenix Building, Teesside University
On the 6th April the IDI hosted its second TEDx event. The Sound Studio was once again transformed into an event space and over 80 people filled the seats to listen to real life speakers and watch a selection of TEDTalks.
The event kicked off with a TED video, ‘How to make a splash in social media’ and was followed by James Wallbank of Access Space with his thought provoking talk, ‘Sustainable Digital – What would truly green technologies look like?’ in which he talked about the rate at which we dispose of technology and what implications this can have.
Following James was oscar nominated animator Peter Dodd with his talk ‘Graphite Gypsies in the Pixel world’ . Peter is a ‘traditional’ animator and talked about some of the amazing projects he has worked on. Next came the second TED video ‘Legos for grown ups’ – an amusing take on our obsession with this childhood toy.
After a short break Daniel Kolodziej, MD of Poll.me took to the stage with his talk, ‘Evolution or devolution – how we interact with technology’ which took a look at the astonishing rate at which technology is evolving and what this could mean for all our futures. ‘Bring on the learning revolution’ was the next TED video to be played which is an inspiring talk from Sir Ken Robinson and which questions the ways in which the younger generation learn.
Our final speaker for the evening was Andy Dobson from Sky. Andy is a technology fanatic and his talk ‘Research and Creativity in the corporate media environment’ looked at some of the cool and exciting projects he is currently working on.
The conference part of the evening ended with a final TED video, ‘A life lesson’ from volunteer firefighter Mark Bezos.
Following the talks and videos attendees gathered in one of the Phoenix Building open spaces for food and drinks and an opportunity to have a go at a digital graffiti wall which was supplied by Kat Pattison and Jim Frize from Sonodrome.
The photos from the evening can be found on Flickr here and the videos will be uploaded shortly.
About TEDx
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading.” The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos — or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos — sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.
